The Process of Making Civil War Photographs

Ever wonder how photographs were taken and developed in the 19th century? Well wonder no more September 14-15 at the Pry House

Come to the Pry House on the weekend of September 14 and 15 for a unique opportunity to see the 19th century process of taking and developing photographs.

Historic photographer John Milleker Jr. will be on-site at the Pry House with demonstrations of the Wet Plate Collodion process as used during the Civil War. John will discuss the chemicals, equipment and methods of the process and end by making an authentic tintype from start to finish. There will be special Civil War Photography Demonstrations at 12 pm and 2 pm on both September 14 & 15.

John Milleker Jr is a professional photographer based in Baltimore Maryland. John and his team of photographers specialize in lifestyle, event and fine art photography. They gladly offer photography sessions using the latest digital technology and archival lab prints as well as nearly all historical photographic processes back to early 19th century. This includes darkroom processes such as real Film photography, Dry and Wet Plate Collodion, Silver Gelatin and ‘Alternative Processes’ of history such as Albumen, Salt, Carbon, Van Dyke Brown and many more. Their work has been featured in several newspapers, magazines and on the web. John has won several awards, most recently the MDDC Press Awards. First place in his division and Best in Show overall among all divisions of press photographers.
