Hope Through History with Dr. Jon Willen

COVID-19 and closures won’t stop us from sharing the incredible lessons we can learn from studying medical care during the Civil War!

On Monday April 19 at 1:00 PM on Facebook Live for a pre-recorded virtual program hosted by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. You can tune in by visiting facebook.com/civilwarmed at the scheduled time.

Director of Interpretation Jake Wynn will speak with Dr. Jon Willen, an infectious disease expert, about his Semmelweis project – a social media project that tracked the COVID-19 pandemic inspired by a 19th century doctor. In this conversation, Wynn will follow up with Dr. Willen about their April 2020 conversation and how much we’ve learned (or not) in the last year. You won’t want to miss this edition of Hope Through History.

Dr. Jon Willen is a retired Infectious disease physician, currently living in Washington DC, after practicing in West Hills, California for 36 years. He is a member of the speaker’s bureau for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and a member of the board of directors of the Society of Civil War Surgeons. He is a docent at Smitsonian Museum of American History, the National Museum of Health and Medicine, and the Society of Cincinnati Anderson House Dr. Willen has been a medical reenactor portraying both Union and Confederate surgeons for the past 18 years.
