Dr. Caroline Newhall sheds a spotlight on the experience of black POW’s in the Confederacy

Director of Education John Lustrea will talk with Dr. Caroline Newhall about her research on black prisoners of war in the Confederacy. Dr. Newhall’s dissertation has shed much needed light on this gap in the historical record about the experience of black prisoners. She will reveal what their experience was like, what medical care they received, where they were held, and more.

Dr. Caroline Newhall is an Assistant Professor of History at Columbus State University in Columbus, Georgia. Recently, she was the 2020-2022 Postdoctoral Fellow at the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech. A native of New York, she received her B.A. from Trinity College (Hartford) and her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her dissertation, “‘Under the Rebel Lash’: Black Prisoners of War in the Confederate South,” analyzed the experiences of Black Civil War soldiers who became prisoners of war in the Confederacy. She is currently working on her book manuscript, as well as a digital database and mapping project centered on Black POWs’ movements throughout the American South.
