Union Naval Medicine with Dr. Mick Bedard

Join us for a special presentation on naval medical care during the Civil War

Dr. Mick Bedard as a Union Naval Surgeon

Join us at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in the Delaplaine Randall Conference Room on February 18 at 2:00 PM as author, lecturer, and retired physician Dr. Mick Bedard discusses Union naval medicine during the Civil War.

Dr. Bedard will compare and contrast the medical practices of the Navy and the Army and explore the role of African American women on board the USS Red Rover. His talk will feature the wonderful period sketches of Dr. Charles Ellery Stedman, USN and studies of the quarterly sick reports from Dr. R. Osgood Mason, USN.

The presentation is included with admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and FREE for NMCWM members.

Robert “Mick” M. Bedard, MD was born in Massachusetts and graduated from Brown University and University of Cincinnati Medical School. Dr. Bedard retired in 2015 after a long career in the fields of allergy and immunology. He was president of the Madison, Wisconsin Civil War Roundtable and is the current treasurer of the Civil War Round Table of D.C. He has been a Union reenactor for over 30 years, and is currently active with the Kearsage Afterguard, a naval reenactment group. In addition to Union naval medicine, Dr. Bedard’s presentations include Connecticut physicians, and the history of the USS Kearsage.
