Mysteries and Lore of Western Maryland

October 14, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EDT

Learn about snallygasters and dogmen from author Susan Fair

Author Susan Fair and her book.

Join us at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in the Delaplaine Randall Conference Room on October 14 at 2:00 PM as author Susan Fair discusses her book Mysteries and Lore of Western Maryland: Snallygasters, Dogmen, and Other Mountain Tales.

From South Mountain’s mysterious spell-caster Wizard Zittle to the monstrous Snallygaster that terrorized the Middletown Valley in 1909 to the dogman-like Dwayyo that was spotted near Frederick in 1965, Susan Fair rounds up the bizarre beasts, odd characters, and unsolved mysteries that color the legends and lore of Western Maryland.

The presentation is included with admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and FREE for NMCWM members.

Susan Fair lives on the shoulder of South Mountain in Western Maryland. She works for the Carroll County Public Library and the Boonsboro Museum of History. Susan has written numerous articles for a variety of publications, including newspapers, magazines, and web sites. As a small girl, she used to imagine growing up to drive around and collect strange stories, so in a way, writing Mysteries and Lore of Western Maryland has been a dream come true.
