Join Dr. Jonathan Letterman, Confederate surgeons, and others for a unique historical experience
Dr. Letterman and wife, Blue and Gray Hospital Association, downtown walking tours
Join us at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine on Saturday, April 6, from 10 AM to 5 PM for our Civil War Immersion Saturday. Events will include a first-person talk with Dr. and Mrs. Jonathan Letterman, demonstrations by Confederate surgeons of the Blue and Gray Hospital Association, and the start of our downtown “One Vast Hospital” walking tours.
Throughout the day on Saturday:
Members of the Blue and Gray Hospital Association will be set up in the Museum’s “Camp Life” gallery portraying members of the Confederate Army’s medical department and displaying period medical equipment. This unit brings a unique perspective to understanding the conflict. This event is free with Museum admission and free to Museum members.
At 10:30 AM and 3 PM (meet in the lobby):
“One Vast Hospital” Walking Tour. Walk in the footsteps of doctors, nurses, soldiers, and civilians who cared for 8,000 wounded soldiers in downtown Frederick. The tour will last about 1 hour and is about 1 mile in length. Tickets for this event are $15 (includes admission to the Museum) or free for Museum members.
From 2 PM-3 PM in the Delaplaine-Randall Conference Room:
Historian Randy Krakauer will give a first-person portrayal of Dr. Jonathan Letterman and discuss his life and career. Miki Krakaur will portray Letterman’s wife Mary and discuss the importance of railroads and women’s roles during the Civil War. This event is free with Museum admission and free to Museum members.
The Blue and Gray Hospital Association is a Civil War living history organization that includes members from PA, MD, VA, & WV. Founded January 1, 2012, the BGHA participate in a variety of different educational activities that include living histories, historical workshops, field trips, lectures, and presentations. The association includes a medical staff, a chaplain, privates, nurses, laundress, seamstresses, and cooks.
Miki Krakauer is a living historian with the Confederation of Union Generals. For the past 12 years, she has been researching and portraying Mary Letterman, wife of Dr. Jonathan Letterman. Miki is a retired transportation planner specializing in rail freight.
