Dr. Hunter McGuire is well known for his service as a battlefield surgeon. Historian Sarah Kay Bierle will reveal his larger contributions to American medicine.

Join historian and speaker Sarah Kay Bierle as she discusses the life and career of notable Confederate surgeon Dr. Hunter Holmes McGuire at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine on Saturday, April 28 at 2:30 PM.

Dr. McGuire served as Medical Director of the Confederate Second Corps in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the American Civil War. His life, education, medical advancements, and military record are an important part of Civil War and American medical history. McGuire’s skill and trustworthiness during the conflict won him the respect of his commanders.

After the war, he continued his medical career and influenced medicine and education through the remainder of the 19th century. Bierle’s presentation will trace McGuire’s challenges and successes at home, in military camps, on the battlefields, in hospital wards, and in classrooms.

This presentation is included with admission to the Museum. It is FREE for Museum members.

Sarah Kay Bierle – author, speaker, and co-managing editor at Emerging Civil War – enjoys studying many aspects of the Civil War, especially the role of civilians, medical staff, and anything related to Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.
