This walking tour of Downtown Frederick will provide visitors with a unique look into the city’s storied African American past.
Join National Museum of Civil War Medicine historians Gabrielle McCoy and Ben Beckman on a guided walking tour of Downtown Frederick on Saturday, August 6 at 2:00 PM focused on African American sites of Civil War Frederick. Tickets are $15 and include admission to the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in addition to the walking tour. Tickets are free for Museum members, but you must still reserve your spot. The story of African Americans in Frederick during the Civil War is often overlooked, but this walking tour seeks to amend that. From black soldiers buried in St. John’s cemetery to still standing slave quarters, the African American past of Frederick is complex, rich, and important to understand. This walking tour of Downtown Frederick will provide visitors with a unique look into the city’s history.
Gabrielle McCoy graduated with her BA in History from the University of Maryland in 2021. She is now pursuing an MA in public history and a PhD in history at the University of South Carolina. Gabrielle’s current research analyzes nineteenth-century performances of masculinity in the American South.
Ben Beckman is a recent graduate of Gettysburg College with a major in History and minors in both Public History and Civil War Era Studies. His field experience includes working at the Gettysburg National Military Park as an archeologist, and he is currently working at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
