Amputation Demonstration at the Pry House

May 13, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

A detail of Waud's illustration of civilians evacuating the wounded at Antietam

Antietam1The Pry House barn was used as a field hospital during the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. Join us there as we discuss and demonstrate the most common surgical procedure of the American Civil War — amputation.

On Saturday, May 13 at 3 PM, NMCWM Program Coordinator Jake Wynn will be at the Pry House Field Hospital Museum demonstrating how Civil War surgeons operated in the field hospitals during the “bloodiest day in American history.”

The program will also examine why so many surgeries were necessary during the Civil War, the medical knowledge of Civil War surgeons, and how amputees struggled to rebuild their lives after their experiences during the war.

This is a “pay-what-you-please” event. All proceeds go to support the Pry House Field Hospital Museum. We also encourage visitors to tour the Pry House exhibits as part of their visit.
