Beyond the Battlefield

Experience history through the art of dance and theater as performed by the pre-professional group FX Dance and the Acting Up Theatrical Troupe of the Mid Maryland Performing Arts Center. This is a one-time theatrical site specific experience, combining original dance and theater on the Antietam National Battlefield.
The Pry House Field Hospital Museum is a peaceful property that went from a home to a hospital to General McClellan’s headquarters in less than twenty-four hours during the Civil War. Actors will read excerpts from journals and diaries of soldiers and citizens who lived through this nation changing event.
The dance portion of this performance is inspired by the service, sacrifice and contributions of Clara Barton, who became forever known as the ‘Angel of the Battlefield’ on that fateful day in 1862 at Battle of Antietam.
“Experiencing history through art brings truly brings the past to life”, said David Price, Executive Director of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. “This young group of performers researched primary sources, incorporated them into their performances and have brought historic interpretation and performance to entirely new level. This type of program touches the young, the old and the scholar alike.”
This is the culmination of an entire season of ‘Dance Then, Dance Now’ at the Mid-Maryland Performing Arts Center in Frederick and New Market, Maryland. The Dance FX company performed at the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office Museum in Washington, DC to a sold out show while the Acting Up Company performed ‘Children of War’ at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick. This performance combines the best of both performances which left audiences and performers inspired.
Tickets are $10 each and will only be sold in advance as we expect this show to sell out.
