Director of Education John Lustrea will talk with author Dr. Emilie Amt about her recent book, Black Antietam: African Americans and the Civil War in Sharpsburg. An award-winning historian. Dr. Amt will recount the personal stories of African Americans, both enslaved and free, who lived on the Antietam battlefield and who worked in the armies who fought there. Special attention will be paid to Georgianna Rollins a free African American woman who worked in the Pry House.
Dr. Emilie Amt is an emeritus professor of history at Hood College in Maryland and an award-winning writer of African American history. She lives near Antietam National Battlefield and serves on the Friends of Tolson’s Chapel Board of Directors. With a doctorate in history from Oxford University, she has published many books and articles on warfare, women’s history and religion.
