Director of Education John Lustrea will talk with historian Dr. Brandi Brimmer about her book Claiming Union Widowhood: Race, Respectability, and Poverty in the Post-Emancipation South. During the pre-recorded program, Dr. Brimmer will discuss her extensive research about black women’s involvement in Civil War medicine and the post-war pension system.

Dr. Brandi Brimmer is an Associate Professor and the Morehead-Cain Alumni Scholar at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Brimmer specializes in African American social and political history. She has spent over a decade engaged in archival research aimed at recovering the voices of Black people—both free and enslaved—from the American Civil War archive. Her articles have appeared in the Journal of the Civil War Era and the Journal of Southern History. Her book, Claiming Union Widowhood: Race, Respectability, and Poverty in the Post-Emancipation South (Duke University Press, December 2020), investigates poor and working-class Black women’s approaches to the law and governmental institutions during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
