Join us on Wednesday, October 28 at 1:00 PM on Facebook Live for a virtual program hosted by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. You can tune in live by visiting facebook.com/civilwarmed/live at the scheduled time.

Education Coordinator John Lustrea will have a conversation with historian Damian Shiels about the experience of international pensioners. Mr. Shiels has done extensive research on the subject, and runs Widows in the Atlantic Project, one of the best digital resources on the subject of international pensioners. The project is part of the incredible website irishamericancivilwar.com which is the best place to learn about the experience of Irish emigrant men, women, and children in the 19th century United States.

Damian Shiels is a historian and archaeologist based between Ireland and England. Mr Shiels runs Irish in the American Civil War, the largest site dedicated to Irish experience of the conflict on the web. There you can find more than 700 scholarly articles and resource pages relating to the Irish in 19th century America. He has 20 years experience in the fields of heritage and history, with particular expertise in public engagement.

Like these programs? Consider supporting our efforts by becoming a member or donating to the Museum! Your efforts ensure that we can continue sharing the story of Civil War medicine in this crucial time. In history, we can find hope amid our struggle against COVID-19.
