Family Friday – Living History at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine

Civil War medicine… on the high seas!

Join us on Friday, July 21 between 2-4 PM for living history at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and explore the complicated story of medical care in the navies of the Civil War.

NMCWM volunteer Brad Stone will be portraying a U.S. Navy surgeon from the Civil War-era while discussing medical care and surgery in the Union Navy. By the end of the Civil War, the Union Navy contained more than 600 ships guarding in excess of 3,000 miles of coastline. These scattered vessels required surgeons to care for the health of those sailors and Marines stationed aboard. Stone will discuss their challenges and surgery aboard Union vessels during the conflict.

The event is included with admission for the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and is free for NMCWM members.

:Brad Stone has had a long career with the Federal government as a senior public relations executive dealing with a wide variety of public health issues. This experience included leading the public relations operations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). He currently combines his interest in the Civil War and medical history by volunteering as a docent on a regular basis at both the National Museum of Civil War Medicine in Frederick, MD and aboard the U.S.S. Constellation in Baltimore Harbor.
