Saving an Arm and a Leg: Preserving Civil War Era Prosthetic Limbs

Get a behind the scenes look at how the Museum’s Civil War era prosthetic limbs were preserved.
On April 16 at 1:00 PM in the Delaplaine Randall Conference Room at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, visitors will have the rare opportunity to view artifacts from the Museum’s collection not currently on display. Thanks to a successful fundraising effort from our members and supporters, three Civil War era prosthetic limbs were successfully restored and given customized storage boxes.
Conservator Sharon Norquest and Membership and Development Coordinator Kyle Dalton will detail both the incredible history of these limbs and the process by which they have been better preserved for future generations. This program is included with Museum Admission and FREE for our members!
Sharon Norquest is the owner and lead conservator of Norquest Conservation Studio. Sharon has a masters degree in objects conservation from the Winterthur University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation. Prior to finding the field of conservation, Sharon completed a BFA in studio arts. Sharon currently runs her own private conservation studio in Herndon, Virginia. She has completed numerous projects for various institutions including the National Air and Space Museum and the National Museum of American History. She enjoys working on complex objects that contain multiple materials including metal and leather.
Kyle Dalton is the Membership and Development Coordinator at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. He is also a summa cum laude graduate of the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where his paper “Active and Efficient: Veterans and the Success of the United States Ambulance Corps” was awarded the Zeender Prize for best history thesis. In his spare time Kyle writes and maintains a website on the lives of common sailors in the eighteenth-century: BritishTars.com.
