The Woman They Could Not Silence–Livestream with Author Kate Moore

November 10, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm EST

Learn the inspiring story of one woman’s efforts to prove her sanity and reform 19th century mental health care

Join us on Friday, November 10 at 1:00 PM on Facebook for a livestream hosted by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. You can tune in by visiting facebook.com/CivilWarMed at the scheduled time.

Museum staff members Tracey McIntire and Rachel Moses will talk with New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal best-selling author Kate Moore about her book The Woman They Could Not Silence: The Shocking Story of a Woman Who Dared to Fight Back, the inspiring story of Elizabeth Packard, who was committed to an insane asylum at the start of the Civil War by her husband, who felt threatened by her intellect and independence.

Elizabeth’s refusal to be silenced and her ceaseless quest for justice not only challenged the medical science of the day and led to a giant leap forward in human rights, it also showcased the determination of a woman who fought the system and won during a time when women were expected to do as they were told.

Kate Moore is the bestselling author of The Radium Girls, which won the 2017 Goodreads Choice Award for Best History, was voted U.S. librarians’ favorite nonfiction book of 2017, and was named a Notable Nonfiction Book of 2018 by the American Library Association. A British writer based near Cambridge, UK, Kate writes across a variety of genres and has had multiple titles on the Sunday Times bestseller list. Her latest book is the critically acclaimed The Woman They Could Not Silence, which, among other accolades, was named runner-up for Best History in the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards and a 2021 Booklist Editor’s Choice.
