Education Coordinator John Lustrea will talk with Dr. Robert Hicks, former director of the Mütter Museum at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, about vaccination in the Civil War. Smallpox, one of the deadliest diseases in human history, was not a massive issue for Civil War armies thanks to widespread vaccination efforts on both sides. Together, they will highlight how those efforts succeeded, where they fell short, and what we can learn from Civil War vaccination.
John Lustrea is the Education Coordinator and the Website Manager at the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. He earned his Master’s degree in Public History from the University of South Carolina. Mr. Lustrea previously worked at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park during the summers of 2013-2016.
